Dec. 2013 Newsletter: If you want it, make it happen!

Two friends are chatting about their diets. The first one says, “I want to be healthy and feel great.” The second one says, “I intend to be healthy and feel great.”

Which one do you think is going to get healthy and feel great? Yep – most likely the one who “intends” it.

Wanting is simply wishing you can have or do a particular thing. Intending means you’re committed to achieving something by making a plan for success – and sticking to it!

So, during this season of eating and shopping excess, make an intention to yourself and believe in it. For a start, commit to “mindful” eating – chew each morsel well, think about what you are eating, be aware of your food choices and the importance of wholesome, nutritious food, and enjoy the flavors, smells, textures of food. But don't obsess too much on the do's and don't around eating. Keep it real and enjoy the season.

The key to intention is action – try this to build your intention muscle.

The Fuel for Desired Results:

  • Do something to make your desire happen. Let’s say you want to eat four servings of vegetables a day. Your first action may be to go to a farmers’ market and purchase a few veggies you can cook for dinner.
  • Your intention is to be more physically fit but you don't have time for a gym. Start with baby steps. Try and leave work 15-20 mins early and get off the bus or subway 2-3 stops early and walk the rest of the way to work. Take a 10-15 mins brisk walk around the block during lunch hour. Set an alarm at your desk at home or at work to get up and walk around or stretch your legs and arms every hour (for even as little as 3-5 mins). (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sitting/AN02082)
  • You really want to go to all those office holiday parties but you know the food will be mostly sweet and salty processed snacks and packaged foods. Make it an intention to eat a filling and healthy snack before the party (like 1-2 tbsp of a nut butter with an apple or banana; a half cup serving size of dried fruits and nuts; a plain unsweetened 6oz yogurt with nuts and fresh fruits, etc; or healthy whole wheat crackers with hummus/bean spread) so that you won't be starving when you get to the part.

  • Celebrate your achievement! Don’t forget to congratulate yourself for meeting your goal.
